Discussion Questions
Icebreaker: What's something you love unconditionally — a pet, a sports team through the losing seasons, an old hobby — and what's something you only love when it's going well?
Questions:
1. In your own words, what's the difference between agape and phileo? What part of that distinction stuck with you or surprised you this week?
2. Where do you see conditional, "I love because..." love treated as normal — in relationships, culture, or even church life?
3. Peter answered Jesus honestly with phileo instead of pretending he could offer agape. Why do you think honesty might matter more to Jesus than the "right" answer? Has there been a time you gave God — or someone else — the right answer instead of the honest one?
4. Joel's statement from Sunday: "You aren’t saved because you love God. You are saved — so you can love God." Does that land as relief, or does part of you resist it? Why?
5. Where in your life right now is your love for God, or for someone else, still running on "because" — performance, guilt, or fear of losing something — rather than freely given? What would change if you actually believed you were free from that?
